Sternoclavicular Joint Injection

The principles for injecting the SCJ are similar to the ACJ. The medial clavicle usually stands slightly proud of the underlying sternum creating an access to the joint from the medial side.

Injection Technique

  1. The presence of joint effusion or synovial thickening facilitates access
  2. Hold the probe in the axial plane overlying the joint
  3. Move laterally until the joint lies at the medial margin of the image
  4. Mark the skin at the medial end of the probe representing the puncture point
  5. Use a small volume syringe for small joints

Key Points

  • Similar principles to ACJ injection
  • Medial clavicle prominence provides access
  • Axial plane probe positioning
  • Medial approach preferred
  • Small volume injection appropriate
